Consisting of four separate, unrelated story campaigns set in different corners of the globe, World War Z sets its four playable characters apart structurally a little closer to the book than the film. Navigating through linear landscapes such as Japan and New York City, your task is to battle for survival while completing a series of objectives with the aid of your team – these might include unlocking doors to let trains pass through or escaping on a boat before being overrun by hordes of zombies.
The narrative is not heavy, but it establishes an intriguing background for your actions. Occasionally, you’re solely focused on escaping alive, while in other instances you help safeguard a mobile caravan of survivors, and still others you guide a renowned scientist. Though brief and fleeting, the story elements are, one can at least feel satisfied that they’ve lent enough substance to the game, making it more than just a series of checkpoints.
