Following the lead of illegal weapons trafficking, the peacekeeping troops stumbled upon a yet unclassified species, which took hold of a small village in Northern Africa. This creature attacked as if with rabies and could not be killed by conventional means. In the “Ground: ALPHA” zone, there were eight known to exist; only four have been captured and placed into quarantine for study while other victims were evacuated and taken to an adjoining research facility that displayed signs of liquefaction within their interior tissues and accelerated necrosis – symptoms typical of previous flesh-eating viruses indigenous to the same geographical area.
This was not due to viral infection; it was the result of an invasion by parasites. The Ground: ALPHA specimens were determined to have been infested with a hitherto unknown species of hookworm that dwelled beneath their skin. Upon inspection, these creatures now identified as “Alpha-worms” laid scores upon scores of eggs which in turn hatched out numerous larvae. These larvae made their way into the bloodstream and brought about different disorders resulting from genetic failure.
